slv.meteorology.mesowest#

MesoWest surface observations for the SLV sites.

Reads the hourly station archives staged under $SLV_USER_DATA_DIR/mesowest:

  • synoptic/: our own Synoptic API pull (lair.synoptic; stations near the TRAX sources, Dec 2014 -> present; meteorology/data/mesowest/synoptic_pull), with hourly/ files and a stations.csv. Used whenever it has the station.

  • hourly/: the fixed john_data pull (96 stations, 2015-01 -> 2025-09-30), with stations_metadata.csv.

Each station is one parquet file of hourly values with a Time column in UTC; the columns vary by station, but wind speed, wind direction and air temperature are near-universal. Wind direction is always returned as the direction of the hourly vector-mean wind (from Uwind/Vwind): the john_data files store an arithmetic mean of degrees, which is wrong whenever an hour straddles north.

Functions

load_station_metadata

Station code, name, latitude, longitude and elevation for the archived stations.

mesowest_dir

The staged MesoWest directory, $SLV_USER_DATA_DIR/mesowest.

nearest_station

The archived station closest to a point, as (station_code, distance_km).

station_hourly

Hourly observations for one station, indexed by Time_UTC.

wind_sector

Compass sector label (N, NNE, ...) for a wind direction in degrees.
