Output.record_failure(kind, variant, receptor_id, record, realization=None)

Write why a receptor’s result of kind failed, replacing an earlier record.

It goes in the logs of the folder whose result failed: a particles failure covers every variant on those particles, a footprint failure is the variant’s own.
